Title: Beautiful Failure
Author: Mariah ColeGenre: New Adult Romance
Hosted by: Mary Elizabeth’s Crazy Book Obsession
Synopsis
If you're looking for a heartwarming story about a girl who falls deeply in love with a troubled boy who changes her life--a sob story with pretty metaphors and a million ways that'll tell you how "broken" she is, STOP. Don't read another word of this.
I'm not that type of girl.
My name is Emerald Anderson and I'm not going to bullshit you: I flunked out of college after my sophomore year, I've been fired from every job I've ever taken, and I've never had a fully functioning relationship in my life.
I wish I could say that I had a cheerleader in my corner, someone who says, "No, Emerald--You're great and you are good at something!" but I don't. My grandparents are completely oblivious to my life, and my mother's dying words to me were "You're going to end up just like me one day. A beautiful nothing."
She was right.
As I decide to start my life over and take two jobs that will forever change me--one from the inside, and one from the outside, I keep my mother's words close to my heart so I can keep the sexy and mysterious Carter Black away.
He's the first man who's ever pursued me, the first man who seems bent on finding out why I am the way I am, but he's wasting his time.
I'm not broken. I don't need to be fixed. I'm perfectly fine being a beautiful failure...

Clare's Review:
Alright I was cautioned about parts of this book. In fact it went
something like: BF is really really good but if you can't handle this n
such, don't read this!
And I was all: I already started and I'm loving it. YOU CANT TELL ME TO STOP NOW YOU WHORE!!!
(True story).
But I'm here to tell YOU...that's it's okay. This book surprised me with its depth of feeling, storyline, and character development. By now you should know that I don't like to give much away in my reviews. I think it takes away from reading the story for the first time. So here's what I will say:
Emerald had a veeeery interesting past. The beginning of the book from past to present to various stages of past. You have a keep up a bit. And I have to say...I liked Emerald from the get go. If her character hadn't developed throughout the book...I still would have liked her. I'd want to help her and hug her, but I would have liked her.
In this book, she truly works hard (though forced much of the time) to work out her past, which is über fucked up, and to figure out how to move forward and make something of herself. Real life no shame here folks!
I need to talk about Carter. He's our hot dude. And I loved him, but he's a bit of an enigma....it's not overdone, but there's an air of mystery to him that I kept questioning but then kept getting distracted by all of Emerald's shit. I think the same happened to Emerald. And there were questions that should have been asked that weren't. But it'll all come out!
I really loved every moment of BF and seriously can't wait for book 2. Like....right fucking away!!!

Wendy's Review:
"My mother was a whore"
WHHHAAAAAT...THE......FUCK! Honestly one of the best openings to a book I've ever read. And it just flowed continuously throughout.
As you can see from Clare's review ^^^, she totally called me a WHORE! I happened to draw the stick on starting this one first and finished it within the day. The ending was in sight and I wasn't putting it down. I had to know! EVERY. THING. But, by the time I got to the end, I kinda wanted a relationship with Mariah (Author). You know, one of those ones where you can call up the author and say, "You fuckin bitch! TELL. ME. NOW." No, really...if we were close, I'd totally pull that shit out on her. I told Clare that she shouldn't start the book because of this ending and so the WHORE came out.
Anyway~ Beautiful Failure was intensely emotional and ultra steamy. I almost had a hard time with where certain lines were drawn in the relationships between Emerald and her 'friends' and Carter. But these bonds were unbreakable when Em finally relaxed and I was able to grasp onto them just as hard.
With a fucked up past that she's trying to leave behind her, Emerald is sort of going thru the motions of life and not really living it. When she lands a job and has a run in with a co-worker, she really starts to learn that life is waiting for her. I felt like Sarah played a huge part in this book that we didn't really get to see much of, but I would have loved to have had more of her. She definitely gets my nod for SUPER BESTY supporting character.
Now for Carter Black! Where the hell do you start with this guy???!?!!!?!
He's openly honest in his intentions. A surefire way to wet panties. And, he's up for the chase.
"Am I going to have to chase you, Emerald?" He stresses every syllable of my name. "I will."
"I'll be gentle..." he whispers. "But I'm not going to stop."
Yeah, he's that guy! The one you secretly wish you had running his dirty mouth at you and then flipping your ass over end with his sincerity.
All in all, I really really liked this book. I think my only problem with this story was the lack of connection I felt between myself and Em. Don't get me wrong, I loved her. She's funny, adventurous (you'll see that with her 'job'), willing, and most importantly determined. However, I felt like I just couldn't connect with her on a personal basis because of her circumstances. She wants one thing so bad, but rather than sucking up the life she's got for now to get to that one place, she lets her mouth and attitude run rampant. Hey, I'm not saying this isn't cool. If you know me, you also know I lack a filter, but JESUS!!! Even I know when to shut the fuck up. LOL.
I rate Beautiful Failure 4 WHORE-TAS-TIC STARS!!! And I cannot wait for book 2!!!
(Another reason I wish I had a closer personal relationship with the author).
Beautiful Failure (Carter’s POV)
First Encounter Scene
First Encounter Scene
Walking inside of Starbucks, I expect to see the familiar bubbly blonde behind the counter, the one who never bothers to ask what I want to order. She always greets me with a “Hello, Mr. Black! I’ll have your grande coffee with two hazel nut shots right away!”
But today, there’s someone new. Someone with black hair who hasn’t even bothered to look up at me.
With her head down, she types a few buttons on the register and sighs. “Starbucks Bistro. What’s your name and what do you want?”
“Is that the new greeting now?” I smile. “Did it change recently?”
“They don’t pay me enough to make conversation,” she says flatly. “What’s your name and what do you want—Please?”
This is a first… “Carter…Carter Black. Grande coffee with a hazelnut shot and two sugars.”
She writes on the cup and quickly turns around, mixing the drink on the back counter. From behind, I notice a small grey and black tattoo on her neck, partially hidden by her long ponytail.
What is that?
I’m admiring her ass when she suddenly turns around and gasps.
She blinks, staring at me with her lips slightly parted. She looks as if she’s about to say something, but no words come out of her mouth.
Her mouth. Her fucking mouth.
Plump, pink lips. Bow shaped. Perfection.
“Are you going to give me my coffee?” I look into her dark green eyes. “Or do they not pay you enough to do that either?”
“Three dollars and seven cents.”
I keep my eyes locked on hers as I hand her the card, wondering why I’ve never seen her in town before.
Once she hands me my coffee, I decide to ask why. “When did you start here?”
“Thank you for visiting Starbucks.” She rolls her eyes. “Have a nice day.”
I smile and bring the cup to my lips, never taking my eyes off hers. I can tell I’m making her uncomfortable because she’s shifting her weight from foot to foot and blinking every few seconds.
“Is there something wrong with your coffee sir?” She purses her lips.
The coffee is actually the best it’s ever been, but I don’t want to leave the store just yet.
“It’s a bit bitter,” I say.
“No, it’s not.” She crosses her arms. “I just made it.”
“I’m pretty sure it is.” I hand the cup back to her. “Can you add some more sugar please?”
“There’s a condiment stand on the back wall. You can add it yourself.”
Is she serious?
I look at her nametag—Emerald, and prepare to really have some fun with her, but the familiar blonde suddenly steps next to her.
“Mr. Black, is there something wrong?” she asks.
“Not at all. I was just asking Emerald if she would add some more sugar to my coffee.”
“Oh! I got it!”
As she remakes it, I smile at Emerald—ignoring the fact that she’s scowling at me. It makes her look even sexier.
“There you are.” The blonde smiles as she hands me the new coffee.
I take a sip of it and immediately regret having it remade. It’s good, but what Emerald made was ten times better.
“Much better.” I look at Emerald one last time, deciding that I’ll be back at the exact same time tomorrow. “Thank you ladies.”
Emerald rolls her eyes and mouths “Asshole,” but she quickly forces a smile. I debate whether I should ask her to say that out loud, but I decide against it.
I’ll have plenty of time to see her this summer…
