Synopsis:
This
book is book one in a three part series, so not all matters are
resolved at the end of the novel. It is also meant for ages 18+ due
to yummy adult content ;)
Happily
ever after doesn’t exist. Not just in the romantic sense, but in
the sense that there will never be a point in life that will contain
no more obstacles.
Josie
Sommers is a nerdy twenty four year old, elementary school teacher
who has always considered herself a strong person. But with the loss
of a loved one and the return of someone she vowed to never see
again, her strength starts to break.
When
he betrayed her in the ultimate way, she never thought she would let
him back into her life, let alone open herself up to falling back in
love with him.
Plagued
with resentment and the burden of her own dishonesty,
Josie
has to decide if forgiving and coming clean is worth the risk of
losing him again. With so many hurdles, we know that Josie’s story
is no fairytale.
That’s
a promise.
Clare's Review:
Whew!! This was quite a debut novel! It was dramatic and hot and angsty. Tough tough tough subject matters. Some I had a reeeeaalllyyy hard time with. But I was totally sucked in.
The book changes time periods a bunch, but it's clearly stated and easy to keep up with, and I like how it keeps you engaged. Some of the dialogue was a bit...young. It felt a tad more high school than college, but I didn't go to college til I was in my 20s so I might just be wrong there.
We follow Josie on her struggles through loss and pain and fear. She's a pretty darn strong girl, most of the time. She has her two best friends, Seth and Brooke. Her relationship with Seth is...a little bit complicated. Like a big fat elephant in the room. But they are helping her wade through her past so any underlying attraction is avoided. Then she meets Blake, who is wonderful. Pretty close to perfect..I mean except the secrets.
Then you get to watch it all unravel. It's quite a ride!
There's a big ol motherfucker of a cliffhanger at the end!! And without giving anything away...I am about as mad at Josie as Blake is. Like, I'm not certain I can get over it, so I'm pretty much dying to know what's next to see if I can!
(Also, I don't know if anyone else felt this way, but I was kind of Team Seth the whole time...)
I have to add this: This part of the book...you know, this part I was so mad at? I'm still mad. I don't agree. I had a REALLY hard time with it. I had to take a step back so I was NOT mad at the author. But I know it's going to cause controversy on BOTH sides. So I wanted to say: Victoria Klahr is telling a story. A hard story that happens in real life and that lots of people struggle with. I think (at least in my own mind) that you're ALLOWED to be mad a Josie, or however you want to feel. That's the point. Victoria is a very promising new author with some balls!!!
3.9 stars!
Excerpt:
“You are gorgeous,
as always, Josie.” He turned me around and brought his lips to
mine. He kissed me slowly, and I could feel myself getting heated. He
grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the bed. I was a little
embarrassed when he started undressing us, unable to believe that I
agreed to do something so risqué. He position me in a particular
way, and went back to his cameras to make sure his shot was right and
to set up timers on them.
“Okay, don’t
think about the cameras,” he said, coming back to me. He started
sucking on my neck as his hands roamed my thighs, stomach, and then
my chest. I tried to ignore the cameras and focused on his tongue and
mouth on me.
Click. He
brought one of my breasts into his mouth and sucked on my hard
nipple. His tongue always knew how to make my body feel good. Click.
I moved my hands into his shaggy sandy blonde hair, and arched my
back, needing more of him. Click. Seth aligned his chest with
mine, and went back to assault my neck as I moved my hands to rub his
shoulders and arms. Click. His other hand that wasn’t
fondling my breast, moved its way in between my legs, and rubbed me.
I gasped at the feeling of increased pressure on my clit. Click.
His fingers really were magical. It didn’t take me long before both
the pressure of his mouth on my neck and breasts and the rubbing of
his fingers against me, made me come. Click.
“So sexy,” he
whispered, before putting on the condom he had ready on the bed.
His eyes were hooded
with desire. He positioned himself in front of me and moved my long
hair in a way that covered my breasts. Click. He eased inside
of me gently, and then pulled back out fast. Click. He teased
me like that for a while, as I whimpered with need. I decided to sit
up and grab onto his back, nearly clawing him to finally give me what
I needed. I started to raise my hips to his at a better rhythm,
loving the small whimper that came out of his mouth. Click.
